Sharing The Gifts of Good Fortune

Sharing The Gifts of Good Fortune

As we curl up into our homes and start making our way through our wish lists, we're excited to release the next card in our Fruit Lovers Collection, the Fortuitous Orange, just in time for the holiday season.

Although occasionally viewed an ubiquitous fruit in the U.S., the orange was traditionally a rare and special holiday treat for many centuries. During the emergence of the Christmas stocking tradition in late 19th century Europe, the gift of citrus fruit in wintry Europe (sometimes in the form of stocking stuffers) was seen as luxurious treat likely purchased from merchants who brought the citrus from places such as Valencia, Spain or Italy.

Moving across the pond and into the early 20th century, Sunkist helped influence the meaning behind gifting citruses during Christmastime as a way to offer others the most "healthful gift"Today, citruses continue to be gifted as a whimsical token of well wishes and a bearer of good fortune and luck around the world.

In addition to being appreciated during Christmas season, citruses are also used during Winter Solstice celebrations to symbolize the promise of longer days to come, as well as good fortune and abundance during Lunar New Year.
